A new study suggests that men taking a Viagra pill may have a higher risk of Alzheimer’s, a disease that could develop over time.
The study is published in the, in the journal
It found men taking the erectile dysfunction pill Viagra were five times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease, compared with those taking the non-prescription medication sildenafil, which is used for heart problems.
“A study of over 7,500 men, followed for 10 years, showed that Viagra caused the highest risk of Alzheimer’s, compared with sildenafil,” said lead author Dr. Andrew Green, assistant professor of medicine at Wake Forest University who led the study.
He said the findings were particularly concerning for those who took higher doses of Viagra, who often have difficulty staying and moving around.
“If you took higher doses of sildenafil, the risk of Alzheimer’s was much higher,” Green told Insider in an email.
He added that the findings also support the idea that those who took higher doses of Viagra should have a different treatment strategy to avoid a potentially fatal, potentially fatal, disease.
“There’s a good reason for the high number of people getting Alzheimer’s. People who have heart disease, who have high blood pressure and are taking medications to treat these conditions are at much greater risk,” Green said.
“It’s a big deal for people with heart disease,” he added.
Researchers also have a long road to understand how the brain works in the aging brain. Green and his colleagues analyzed brain scans of more than 100,000 adults between the ages of 45 and 70. The findings suggest that people taking a lower dose of Viagra, which contains sildenafil, have a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease compared with those taking higher doses of sildenafil.
“This is the first study to look at how Viagra affects the brain,” Green said.
Researchers did not test the effects of Viagra on other diseases, including Alzheimer’s.
The study was published in, the journal of the American Academy of Neurology.
“It’s important for people to talk to their doctor and get their medical history as well,” said Dr. Aaron Kesselheim, a professor of neurology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.
“So, I think there’s a real need for a new study to look at whether or not it’s responsible for causing the decline in the Alzheimer’s risk.”
The study was published in the November issue of the journalThe men in the study were given Viagra pills, which contained the active ingredient sildenafil, at a dose of 50 milligrams, or 50 milligrams, three times a day.
The men took the pills for one week.
The scientists also measured the amount of time Viagra was taken. They found that the group taking the sildenafil had a higher rate of Alzheimer’s disease, compared with the group taking the pill without the drug.
Viagra is not typically prescribed to people with heart disease, Green said.
“I would say this study, the new study, is a really good example of how a lot of research is needed,” he said.
The study was published in the April issue of the journal
It found that Viagra caused the highest risk of Alzheimer’s, compared with sildenafil.
Researchers said the findings may suggest that those who took higher doses of Viagra, which contain sildenafil, may have a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s, compared with those taking higher doses of sildenafil, and may have been at greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s.
“The idea that the heart is a problem,” Green said.
He also pointed out that the risk of Alzheimer’s has been reported in men who have sex with men. Green said it’s not clear whether this is linked to Viagra.
“The risk is much higher in men who have erectile dysfunction, which are very common in older men,” Green said.
